Son La College is an educational institution of the province in the system of universities and colleges of the national education, under the State management of the Ministry of Labor - Invalids and Social Affairs and the administrative management of the People's Committee of Son La province.

Son La College performs the following functions:

- Offerring inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary training at different levels (university-level, college-level, intermediate-level, or intermediate-level vocational training...) in order to develop diverse human resources for Son La province and the northern provinces of Lao People's Democratic Republic.

- Training and fostering practical foreign languages ​​and applied informatics in the forms of part-time learning, distance learning or guided self-study.

- Doing scientific research and applying advanced science and technology to serve the requirements of socio-cultural-economic development of Son La province and the Northwest region.

- International cooperation in training and scientific and technological research.

Son La College has the following specific tasks:

1) Training and fostering:

- Training and fostering teachers and administrators with intermediate-level and college-level for preschool and general education (primary and secondary school).

- Training and fostering scientific and technical staff with college degrees in economics, engineering, technology, culture, art, physical education, library and information science, agriculture, forestry and fishery, etc.

- Implementing the transition training process from intermediate to college or university according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training.

- Associating with universities, academies or research institutes in training teachers, officials, civil servants and public officers at university level in the form of continuing education (part-time and distance learning).

- Investigating the demand of training and fostering courses to improve the proficiency in foreign languages, informatics, information and communication technology; examining and granting certificates to the center's students who completed the courses according to the program of the Ministry of Education and Training.

- Implementing pre-college and university preparatory training for ethnic minority students and those who are in extremely difficult areas according to the provincial planning.

- Supplying training programs in the fields of Vietnamese, teacher training and other majors with college degrees for Lao People's Democratic Republic under the cooperation program of the province.

- Training intermediate technicians.

- Training and vocational training for employees.

2) Research and scientific application:

- Doing scientific reseacrh and implementing advanced scientific and technical application which are suitable for the economic development conditions of the province and the Northwest region.

- Performing production and service activities in accordance with the legislation and appropriate to the functions, tasks and training majors of the college.

3) International cooperation:

- Implementing international cooperation tasks through programs and projects of the Government, central ministries and provinces in training, fostering, researching and applying scientific and technological advances.

- Cooperating with foreign agencies, organizations, individuals and overseas Vietnamese in training, fostering, researching and applying scientific and technological advances in the fields of training.

4) Performing other duties as prescribed by the Law of the Ministry of Education and Training and the code of the college:

Depending on the practical requirements, Son La College may be assigned other new tasks by the competent authority.
